When to replace your timing belt

Timing belts are usually flat, rubber belts with teeth. If a timing belt fails, the cause is usually attributed to stripped teeth; however, this will result in a non-functioning engine, so replacement is crucial. In the past, manufacturers usually recommend replacing the belt at specific intervals; however, in newer, more advanced engines, timing belts designed to last the effective life of the engine.

Despite the fact that newer belts are more durable, less expensive, and often offer quieter use, a failing timing belt will be too loose and whip around, causing an excess in noise that may not have been audible previously.

Correct belt tension is critical. Most engines feature adjustable tensioning roller to allow correct adjustment of belt tension, so take the necessary measures and purchase a new belt with unworn teeth that will provide adequate grip and fit correctly according to your engine.
