Commentary on killing a killer

Why is there such an outcry of mercy for murderers? Why is it, that of all the things in this world that do need our care and attention, some of us wish to spend part of our time defending the right to live, for those who do not respect the right to live?

The debate is not about feeling sorry for the poor convict who will be executed for the crime he's committed. The debate seems to categorically fall into religion, and then ultimately blame being laid on the Christians for the system of capital punishment. I have no problem with capital punishment. Incidentally, I would hope that no one ever killed someone in my family, or truth be told they would rather have had the chair after I got done with them. Okay, not everyone feels this way. What then do you propose? Alert the population that the punishment for murder has been lightened? What? That speaks more loudly on society's lack of concern regarding murder in the first place than it does anything else.

Why the compassion for killers? These people have committed the worst of crimes, that is why they face such a degree of punishment. True, Jesus says that vengeance is His, and that He will repay. Of course that crosses out repayment of suffering with suffering, but it does not cancel our obligation to good government. When a prisoner is tried, convicted, and then executed for capital crimes, it isn't wrong. In fact it is exactly the right way to handle the situation. Then when the killer does die, they can face God and He will deal with their soul justly.

Prison ministry is a wonderful chance for people who do hold this compassion for inmates to go to them with the good news of God's love. If you really care for them, then support prison ministry, so that the reconciliation can be made before it is too late.

One aspect of this modern world is the ability we would like to think we have to solve any problem by way of study or reason. But the problem of murder dates all the way back to the first murder of Able by his brother Cain. People kill for many reasons, and sometimes for no reason at all. Whatever they have done to earn the seat on death row, the punishment does fit the crime, and they will have to face it. Sure it is awful to see them awaiting execution with no chance to avoid it. That's why if you can, you must deliver words of encouragement to them before their time here is at an end.

The wages of sin is death, that is proved by the fact that all sinners die, and we are all sinners. Really, spiritually we are
