The 12-step program should be an adjunct to therapy with a counselor who has worked with people with eating disorders. Depending on the length of the disorder before finding help and the depth of the disorder, it can take several years of regular therapy to see change in behavior. This is especially true with anorexics. Their problem is more of a body image disorder than an eating disorder, and is very difficult to treat. Some have tried intense one on one therapy in a special home with people who try to love them back to health while dealing with underlying causes. It is yet to be shown if these places are successful in the long run. A person with an eating disorder should also be seeing a doctor on a regular basis due to the health problems these disorders can bring on as people continue to abuse their bodies.
Regardless of the type of therapy, a person with an eating disorder needs help. These are very serious disorders that generally can't be fixed' without help of some kind. If you know someone who suffers, be their friend, but get them help. You may save their life.
