GLOBAL WARMING: A CASE FOR CONSERVATION-
While speeding down I-25 towards Denver, I have noticed something that has bothered me for quite some time. I began my commute in the summer of 2006 as I was living in Colorado Springs and commuting to Denver to attend classes at Metropolitan State College of Denver. During the summer, even though the gas prices were climbing steeply and the public screamed expletives at the gas pumps, no one stopped driving nor did they opt for a vehicle that cost less to maintain and could go further on one gallon of gasoline. In particular, I noticed that people simply pointed their fingers at public officials, such as the President or the Governor, and vowed vengeance at the polls come November. As we saw, however, vengeance was not had.
Making matters worse, after the summer passed and fall firmly took hold of the Nation, gas prices eased. Much to my dismay it was not public rejoicing in savings by saving more money at the pump, rather, they traded in their 18 mile-per-gallon SUV for a 15 mile-per-gallon Hummer. Here in Colorado there is a bit of a boom with regard to salaries, business and real estate. You see, the infrastructure here has been growing at a brisk pace for several years now and shows no signs of stopping. Therefore, cars that were once owned by the rich and wealthy are now finding themselves parked in the higher end of the middle class in the middle of suburbia. Every day, as I begin my commute, I give way to a Hummer that is parked down a block from my home. It is black, huge in size and hasn't a speck of dirt on it. If I had to wager a guess, I'd say that man is winning his war on urban warfare.
In the past few years the public has heard science preach more and more loudly, "Behold! Global Warming Nears!" OK, so they aren't standing atop a mountain preaching the gospel according to Darwin, but they have begun to warn the public, and more frequently, that the realities of Global Warming are real and they are here. Some have even gone as far to say that the damage we have caused our planet is severe enough that we're simply out of time and that it is only a matter of time before we all must pay the price. What that price is has yet to be seen; however, whatever it is, I imagine it to be too high anyway. We even have famous figures and former heads of state preaching the Global Warming warning, saying that we must cut deeply into the amount of pollution we create so that we might stave the pending tide.
