When I was a kid, my mom loved to take us on road trips. So I have a good deal of experience in this matter. I've always loved road trips. One thing that I find nessecary is stopping often. It really helps everyone's moods to get out, get fresh air, strech and use the restroom. Stopping every two hours is recommended to keep your blood circulating and to ward off going stir-crazy. Also, taking time seeing points of interest along the way can break up the monotony of the road. Whether it's a museum, old battleground, or something of the like it will lend a little amusement and possibly an unexcepted educational experience.
Playing games helps time move quickly. A great one that kids and adults can enjoy is the Alphabet game. This game works the best if you're on a highway with plenty of signs and other vehicles. Choose a time to start and begin with the letter "A", everyone will look for an "A" and shout it out when they have found it. Though each person must find their own letter, you can't use a letter that's been taken by another person. Continue down the alphabet according and the first person to find the letter "Z" wins.
Listening to music is great too, if everyone can agree on what to listen to. Another option is to do the singing yourself, especially if your family or group enjoys singing. Listening to books on tape or CD is wonderful as well. You can also have someone read aloud, or everyone take turns telling stories and jokes. The main thing is that you keep your minds occcupied, and your moods light and fun. That makes all the difference when you're in small quarters with several other people.
