Why geologists are so concerned with the San Andreas Fault

The San Andreas Fault is one of the largest fault lines in the world. Along with the disturbing fact that it is located near heavily populated areas only makes it;s size and potential for disaster that much larger.

This fault is responsible for frequent earthquakes but many geologists predict that the 'big one' has yet to hit. The 'big one' is named so because many believe it will be of such a large magnitude that it will not only separate California from the mainland but it will buckle a good portion of land causing one side to slide over the other.

Many geologists have warned developers to stay away but like many human errors, they continue to expand the population around this dangerous fault. The fault is also so large that a massive earthquake from it will open it wide allowing molten lava and extreme heat pressure to escape from the earth.

Geologists aren't suggesting a devastating earthquake of legendary proportions will occur; they are warning that it will happen.
