My younger brother has always been a huge fan of music, new and old. While he is ultra modern, he still loves to listen to the greats and because of that he's constantly buying records from garage sales. The problem with these records however, is that many of them are so scratched that they skip constantly. This of course annoys him to no end, so we needed to find a way to resolve this issue, so that he would be able to use more of the records that he was purchasing. Especially since about 25% of the records that he would find would have issues with skipping.
What we found was that there are products available on the market that you can use to repair records. While these products aren't actually meant for records, they work just as well for records as they do for their intended purpose. The reality is that records are just so old and the market so low for them, that you just aren't going to find any real record repair kits around anymore. So, you have to think modern and think about what we do have that is somewhat similar to a record. So, we came up with our solution through this through process... the DVD repair kit. While this might seem like something that for the most part is quite different, the results really aren't all that different. In fact, I would say that the results on a record are much better in some instances.
Essentially the repair kit consists of nothing more than some liquid and a cloth. You take the liquid apply it to the cloth and rub it around the damaged disc or in our case, record. This solution will go into the cracks, filling them almost magically. You then allow it to dry for a few hours to ensure that everything is perfect. Once you are done, the record should work great. While there will still be some minor skipping, it isn't as noticeable as it was before and in many instances it will be completely repaired.
I do recommend however that if you are using this product to use it only on records that you don't care about as much first. While we have used it on several records with success, I always recommend using the same care with it as you would on any carpet cleaning product. Use it on what you wouldn't miss first, then move on to other things. This product isn't meant for records, so you never know what it could do to a particular record. So keep that in mind while using this product.
As for the product, you can find it at virtually any retailer. There are several different brands and all work about the same. So you can grab virtually anything without any worries of it working. I would recommend using some cleaner to remove any dust or residue on the records prior to applying the repair solution. This will ensure that you don't lock these into the record permanently, causing more issues that you are actually solving.
