How to find a cheap apartment in New York City

I've another method if you're looking for modern, but listen - for a cheap apartment in New York, you may have to lower your expectations a little. Finding a doorman building apartment for less than $1,000. per month will be difficult. And if you want an elevator, you are further limiting yourself. The more flexible you can be about the space you inhabit, the better off you'll be. You probably can get teh right address, you just might not have a humungous apartment..but since most of your friends will probably be meeting you in the lobby of your building, they need never know that your apartment is just big enough to fit your futon in! The lobby's of these places are usually rather grandiose.

Once you've made your list, go there. Now you're probably thinking, "List? What List?" Let me elaborate for you. By list I mean, Supermarkets, Synagogues, Churches, Outreach programs, etcetera. You need to get your apartment by means of "infiltration" like a Russian Spy from a James Bond movies. Let's just call it "Apartment Espionage." I'll give you an example...for a long time I'd been going to a church on Gramercy Park. It was at coffee hour that I met the loveliest blue haired ladies. And then, at the bake sale one of the ladies invited me to brunch at Park Avalon around the corner...lovely, jazz, flavored butter, and not to pricey. It was over hour lovely brunch (which I treated) that I found out that she owned one of the brownstones on Gramercy Park, and that, because of hard times and loneliness, she wanted to rent out the servant's quarters (which although connected to her 14 room apartment had it's own entrance and kitchen and bath) to someone she knew. She was willing to rent it at 500. per month! An aparment like this one on Gramercy park fetches almost 3,000.00 a month, so you can realize the savings.

I've also seen ads in the Supermarket on Park, usually someone who isn't really in touch with the real estate market, or maybe they just want to be a little choosier about who they rent the apartment to. But it's this WofM I was telling you about. It can translate into thousands of dollars in savings.

Join the local swim club if you can swing it, or any of the outreach volunteer programs in the area...this is how you meet the people who live there..and people are always more willing to help someone they know, than a complete stranger. Be friendly, personable and affable..this is the way to land the flat.

Now you think, "I can't, I'm too proud." Listen, there's no
