How to improve conditions in distressed inner-city neighborhoods

Improving conditions in inner-city neighborhoods is not just a 'nice idea in theory', but a realistic goal that is within reach for one of the richest nations in the world. Through a number of programs and efforts, we could see an urban renaissance within the next generation.

The first key to spurring urban renewal is through government programming support. Creative legislation that provides incentives for businesses to create good-paying jobs in these neighborhoods is a must. Access to complimentary job training and education to get these good jobs would also be necessary, as well as highly subsidized child care, so that single parents could take advantage of economic growth and opportunities.

Improving public education and attendance rates is also key to restoring inner city neighborhoods. By taking school funding off the property tax rolls and distributing money fairly, all students across the country would have equal facilities and opportunities. To recruit motivated, intelligent teachers, the government would need to enact legislation to incentivize teaching in the inner city. A loan cancellation program - where the federal government repays 10% of your student loans for every year of work done in an inner city school - could go a long way to recruitment and retention.

The government could also help by creating a National Service Corps. In exchange for a small salary plus housing and two years of service, young people could earn college grants and scholarships by working to help revitalize these neighborhoods. Whether through adult literacy training, rebuilding dilapidated housing, providing child care for single parents, helping to run neighborhood clinics, their efforts would strengthen the community and give young people from within the neighborhood a chance to help out and earn money for college.

There are many other creative ideas and programs that could be implemented to improve conditions in distressed inner cities. The first step, however, is convincing others that it's an important task, and a realistic goal. I believe it is, and will continue to urge our representatives to take action.
