Short stories: Infatuation

"He's here," Tyra had seen him from the corner of her left eye. Her heart beat faster as if she was running. Her stomach turned fluttery. She had liked him the moment she laid eyes on him. He was charming despite his height. He was polite to everyone including her.

Whenever she saw him, her pulse quickened and she became breathless. It was difficult to concentrate on doing anything whenever he was within her vicinity. She became distracted because all she could think of was how good it would feel if he held her hands or talked to her. She would become giddy with the heat.

Today, he walked towards her. The room's temperature seemed to rise every step he took towards her. Tyra refused to look up and pretended to be very absorbed in the circuits that she was testing.

"Hi," when he was just beside her, he was so close to her that Tyra was so afraid that she was blushing to her roots of her hair. She lifted her head slowly and returned his greeting.

"Would you like to be in my project group?" Project with him! Tyra was jubilant! Of course she would love to.

"Sure! I love to," she smiled broadly. She pinched herself to ensure that his asking wasn't a dream. He looked at her oddly. He was asking her lab partner, not her. Embarrassed, she continued her study of the circuits.

Chloe, her partner, rejected him because she had a joined another group. "Why don't you ask Tyra? She would love to, right, Tyra?"

Tyra stared at her, speechless. She dared not look at Allan who was standing closer to her now.

"Er, Tyra, would... would you like to?" he sounded tortured to her ears. Tyra's heart broke. He was asking out of politeness because of Chloe. However, she needed a project group and he was asking. She turned to him and agreed.

The group met up twice a week on reporting the progress of each stage. The irony was that Allan was always paired together with her by the project leader, Neil. He felt they both worked well together and it sped up the project progress.

Although Tyra knew Allan wasn't interested in her, she was still infatuated with him. She would fantasize about him asking her out for the year end prom or watch a movie with him. Those fantasies never came true.

He was calling her mostly to discuss about the project. That was all they ever talked about. There wasn't any personal questions such as her hobbies, hopes or dreams. Just the project. Disappointed but knowing he was her motivation to go to school, Tyra pressed on with the project. They worked well together. Neil was always happy with their progress.

It was the end of the school year. Their final year and Tyra was dreading this day. After the graduation day, she wouldn't be able to see Allan again. It made her upset and she didn't eat well that day. However, her parents were happy to see her graduate and she didn't want to disappoint them. With the ceremony over, she took some more photos with Chloe who had become her best friend, and other classmates. Allan was nowhere to be seen.

As she was leaving with her friends to celebrate, Allan walked towards her. "Tyra, may I talk to you for a minute?" She nodded and went with him towards a bench that was empty.

"I'm starting to like you," he began. Tyra's heart soared. "Will you go out with me? Dinner or something?" he sounded awkward and shy at the same time. Tyra beamed at him and agreed.

It all began with an infatuation.
