Automotive maintenance: When to replace tires

The tires on your vehicle are of optimum importance and yet many people fail to replace them before they become unsafe or cause wear and damage to other parts of your steering assemby and other parts of your vehicle. Do you know that a front tire blowout at just over 37 miles per hour in a high profile vehicle such as an SUV, a lowered or specially lifted truck, or even certain types of cars? So what to do?

Make sure that your tires are not showing signs of apparent wear, damage, or tread seperation at least once a month by doing a visual inspection of your tires. Many people may actually feel the need to do this once a week or once every two weeks depending on how many miles you put on your vehicle. A visual inspection of the tires is a simple thing to do and only takes a moment. What are you looking for? Signs of wear, balding patches where the tread has been worn down almost flat, patches of steel wiring which is inside a "steel belted radial", bumps, lumps, or annomalies that will effect the way that your tires roll.

Take a moment while driving to turn off the radio, open your window and listen for the sound of whining, screeching, or clunking noises that may be coming from beneath your vehicle.

Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum recommended mileage for the tires that you put on your vehicle.

When you feel a loss of control of your vehicle when driving through water or when you are turning corners.

Be compulsive about checking your tires and paying attention to the way that your vehicle is rolling and any other indications that your tires may be in need of replacement. Sometimes the extra expense of adding a new set of tires to our budget is just not a "doable" expense when first you begin to note wear or problems with your vehicles tires. However you should fit these neccessary vehicle maintenance funds into your budget periodically as the simple cost of owning and maintaining a safe and well kept vehicle. If you do see wear and tear on your vehicles tires the best advice is to replace them as quickly as possible.
