This is a tough question. It also depends on what kind of zombies we are dealing with. Take for example the zombies from the original "dawn of the dead" movie, they moved so slowly that in all honesty I don't understand how people got caught by them in the first place. In this case I would suggest:
DON'T BE STUPID
In Urban Areas:
Now we come to the zombies from the new "dawn of the dead" movie. These zombies are hard to survive as they move very fast, hunt in packs and take quite a bit to stop(minus a blow to the head but it can be tricky). The best idea for this is different depending on where you are when the zombie apocalypse starts. To barricade yourself in a well defended place would be your best bet if in the city although there are always food problems with this idea. usually regular trips would be needed to gather more and thats where the danger is and also if the zombies don't starve to death (as in the movie "28 days later") then there is a chance that you will run out of food and starve to death. If it turns out they don't starve to death I would say making a break for the countryside as the zombie population in these areas would be far less making your survival rate far greater.
In The Country
While in the country you could find a secluded part of it in, say a forest, and build homes in the trees(I'm taking it for granted here that the zombies can't climb trees, if they can then just hope they don't find you in the forest) food could be grown if there is farmland here and if it comes to it small villages can be raided(It also helps if you live in a country where guns are legal as then you have a decent chance of surviving an encounter and these could probably be found in the country as most farmers will have a rifle or shotgun of some sort).
Equipment for fighting them(if in a gun legal country):
- a baseball bat or similar bludgeoning weapon(use this as a last resort)
- a handgun as a side arm
- a rifle or shotgun(your choice)
- fully enclosed Kevlar body armor
- A knife
- lots and lots of ruddy good luck
Equipment for fighting them(in a gun illegal country):
- a cricket bat or similar bludgeoning weapon
- fully enclosed Kevlar body armor
- A knife
- A machete or similar sharp bladed tool with a decent length on it
- A BB gun with nickel pellets
- Even more luck than those in the gun legal country
Benefits of a gun legal country:
- You have guns wayhey
- Thats about it
benefits of a non gun legal country:
- stupid gangs of hooligans won't have access to guns so you can at least try and run away from them without them shooting you in the back
hopefully with this information if a zombie apocalypse ever does occur your chances of survival will be greatly increased.
