Testimonies: First love for teens

by Bambi

Love is a beautiful thing. Do not underestimate or belittle it. I first fell in love when I was 16 years old. My first love was also my first boyfriend. He ended up being a lot of other firsts throughout our two and a half year relationship.

We met at my first high school dance held towards the end of December, right before winter break. I saw him lying on the floor towards the back of the cafeteria where the dances were held. I found this rather odd and went over to ask him what was wrong. He didn't really tell me much so I had one of my friends try to pry some more information out of him. Apparently, the girl he liked wouldn't dance with him. I tried to get him to dance with me, but he wouldn't. I still ended up spending a lot of time next to him, trying to change his mind.

His mind never changed, but at the end of the night, I came to realize that we had a mutual friend. This friend is the person who changed his mind and also gave him my number. Over break he called and we would talk on the phone for all hours of the night. When school started again, he started walking me to my classes and carrying my books. He was always quite polite. About a month after the dance, another friend of ours held a party. Somehow we ended up on the floor of a shed. We just layed on the floor and talked, and gradually our lips kept getting closer, finally touching while we still talked. I asked him what he was thinking, and instead he showed me, resulting in my first kiss. =)

Over the next few months, we continued talking on the phone, every night for eight or more hours. We would talk about anything and everything. In May was when he first whispered an "I love you" over the phone. It was barely audible, and without thinking I whispered it right back. Spring turned into summer and school was finally let out. Every single day, rain or shine, he would ride his bike four miles to my house and four miles back. I fell in love with him more and more each day. We had a very intense connection mentally, physically, and emotionally. In the final days of summer, he confided that he was moving an hour away. It was heart wrenching to hear, but we had to face the realities of the situation.

We ended up staying together for the next school year in this long distance relationship. We would see each other every couple of weekends and we had an enormous amount of trust in each other. After the school year, he moved back and I was overjoyed. Summer came once again and I got to see
