Origins of the Sunni/shia split in Islam

The connection between these two Islamic groups seems very unlikely due to centuries of violent religious conflict. The violence originated when the Prophet Muhammad died without naming a successor. A rift began with the doubt of the true leader of Islam. The Sunni sect believed that Abu Bakr , close friend and father of the prophet was the rightful heir. The Shia believed Muhammad had appointed his son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib in an announcement years earlier. This split caused a civil war thirty years later. The Sunni-Shiite animosity continued throughout history into assassination, persecution, and assaults throughout Middle East. Recent times have not mended the differences since there are no interactions between the two groups. Violence between them has increased in Iraq because of reformation for elections. It would seem that both divisions would never quell their hatred towards each other.
