How to bond with a new cat

My husband says that me and my cat Snuggles are inseparable but I beg to differ. The cat that I really had a unique bond with was my cat Patches. I got Patches through a friend of my mom's years ago. She was a unique kitty and also what you would call a rescue kitty. She has been gone for some years now but her memory is still very clear to me. She was a beautiful long haired calico with many patches of colors. That is where her name came from. Her eyes were topaz colored and she was very loving to me. When I got her she was very skittish because she was not trusting anyone because she was abandoned outside and taken in by my mom's friend. She would hide under our bed and come out only to eat and use the litter box but otherwise she didn't show herself. The day came when she finally would trust us enough to come as far as the doorway to the front room and that was all. After awhile she would come out and hang around but if someone strange came into the house she would scamper back to the safety of our bedroom and under the bed.

I had to leave her at the old place till we got most of the stuff placed but when I went to get her she wasn't there. As I searched for her I had found a window open and that is how I think she got out through the hole in the screen. I spent the day and late into the night looking for her and waiting to see if she came back. The next morning I heard her crying in the backyard I was so happy to see she was OK. I got her in the house and put her in the carrier and took her to the new place. That was the day our bond took us to a new level of trust.

She would come to greet me when I got home from work. When I was sick she would be right there to make sure I was OK. We would play hide and seek but she would always go around the house a meow as if to say Mom where are you? Patches was a great kitty we didn't know how old she was when we got her but she lived with us for almost 10 years. The saddest day was when I had to put her down she looked up at me as much as to say "Its ok I know you don't want me not to suffer anymore and I love you too".
