Improve relationships both on and off the job

Like everything, its down to balance and the simpler tenets of life.

Always be honest, even if it is your boss who is asking you to lie this will always pay in the long run. That lying boss will ultimately go to far one day and be expelled and what kind of person will they be looking for to replace him?

Courtesy and respect for others. Just like you can never overdress for a business meeting, you can never be too polite. Being from the South I tend to get away with it more than most, they all just assume. Plus whenever anyone objects to being called sir or ma'am, I always apologize and explain my father's military background. All is well.

A good sense of humor. Again, here is where balance is important. Avoid laughing at any joke that could come back to haunt you, no matter who tells it. Strength of character goes farther than "if you grin you're in." on the flip side, know when to use humor to diffuse a situation, when there is confrontation or there seems like there is no light at the end of the fiscal tunnel.

Timing. Always be on time for everything. If nothing else, be early. I cannot tell you how many times I have been complimented for being punctual, being considerate of ther people's time, all by taking the extra few minutes in the morning to be on time. If you are stuck in traffic on delayed due to a flight, call your appointment ASAP to let them know of the circumstances that are beyond your control. This is also something that is scarce in today's business world. Too many times people call "on their way" or after the fact to explain why they were late versus giving the other party a head's up. Also, use this chance to offer solutions to the timing issues at hand. Recommend a brief meeting after work, perhaps during lunch, or grabbing a drink later. This puts the burden back on them and shows them you understand if they are booked up. Too many times I have seen another appointment get bumped in favor of my diligence.

Responsibility. Owning up to your mistakes and giving credit where credit is due. When you foul up be it grand or under the radar, know this: It will be found out sooner or later. It is always best to be the first to bring this to light. It shows that you follow your work and that you are diligent and honest when it comes to doing what is best for the company. Accept your failures and learn from them, it is rare that someone has been fired, black-balled, or passed up for being honest.

It really is that simple, follow the old Golden Rule model and always consider the other's involved and you will stand out from the vast majority of the business world these days.
