The Iraqi war has some very close similarities with Vietnam. We invaded a country that made no direct military confrontation with the United States. Both presidents used the peoples emotional vulnerability to justify their invasion. The war on Iraq changed various themes from " Weapons of Mass Destruction " to " Operation Iraqi Freedom ". Yet, as time went on and the justification for war was blatantly proven wrong, the president still pressed on and worked the American peoples fear of a pending "terrorist threat" if we pull out of Iraq.
Once the democrats took over D.C. they voiced their opinions on Iraq and showed it though congressional vetoes.
As a soldier of the United States Army, we are told not to voice our political thoughts through public media.
If I am good enough to die for this country, should I not be able to voice my opinions as well? If hippies that burn effigies of American soldiers can voice their opinions, and extremist church groups rally around soldiers funeral chanting " God is punishing US soldiers because America accepts homosexuality ", then I want to voice my opinions.
It is clearly evident now that the Iraqi was is extremely unpopular. We were not sanctioned by the UN, and most of our allies that had troops in the desert have pulled out (except for a few hundred soldiers here and there).
The initial mission was to rid Saddam of WMD. None were found.
The second mission was to find Saddam. We found him.
On May 1st, 2003 aboard a aircraft carrier, president Bush announced to the world "Mission Complete". More US causalities were sustained from May 1st 2003-Present day.
Getting to the point. Should US pull out of Iraq now or in the near future? It's a very complicated question. President Bush made some good points when the Dems set a time-table. However, after bankrupting our reserves and losing 3000+ soldiers lives, it's time to admit your mistakes and move on to recovery.
Building the new Iraqi Army has made some progress. But they lack serious discipline, rampant corruption, and the current civil war in Iraq are some of the problems that Iraqi Army has to deal with.
What are we trying to gain in Iraq? Making the world a safer place? How can we devote billions of dollars daily in the desert when we have enough problems here? How is it that our children have no school supplies, we have a serious shortage of schools, health care, Veterans care, lack of police officers, just to name a few.
For you all you naysayers. If were to initiate a draft and every able bodied man was to go to Iraq, would you still be for it? I highly doubt it.
