Book reviews: Ultrametabolism: The simple plan for automatic weight loss, by Dr. Mark Hyman

this.

Another big myth is that eating no carbs or eating low carb will help you to lose weight. In reality, if you eliminate your carbs, you are depriving your body of energy that it needs in order to perform tasks. While you are probably going to lose weight short term, your body is going to start substituting other things to make up for the lack of normal energy and this includes muscle mass. Just like not eating at all, not giving your body adequate energy producing carbs, can result in you gaining more weight in the long term, as you reduce your metabolism over a period of time.

Losing the weight
The book after breaking down the different myths gets into how to actually lose the weight, now that you understand what not to do while dieting.

One of the biggest methods of controlling your weight, is by controlling your food intake. The book talks about methods of appetite suppression and how to control your portions. My personal recommendation and the book lightly backs this is up, is to do this slowly. If you are to back off on your portions all at once, it's going to make it harder to keep on your diet. By easing off on your portions, you will find that you are going to lose far more weight, and stay far more dedicated to your diet, than if you do it all at once. Besides, remember, if you are to remove too much food from your daily intake at a time, your body will freak out and start storing food as fat to protect itself, fearing starvation. So slower is always better. Some other concepts include eating with a dark table cloth or with the lights dim. This is a trick that you can play on your mind, which will undoubtedly slow your eating and make your food appear less appealing. Also, try always eating your vegetables and fruits first, then start working on other items. You do this to fill yourself up with the lower calorie foods first, so that you have less room for the higher calorie foods.

I'm sure that everyone has heard about 'cortisol' levels, which apparently build fat in the body through stress. Science has shown that the more stress on an individual, the more likely their body is to store fat. In order to combat this, try and make your life as stress free as possible. Rather than sitting at home with your screaming kids, go to the park with them. Let them burn off their energy. This will not only benefit them, but it will get you out in the fresh air, which is great for stress, it will make you feel less trapped, which helps with stress, and I'm sure
