Book reviews: Ultrametabolism: The simple plan for automatic weight loss, by Dr. Mark Hyman

it is a guide book to good living. Rather than saying that you need to avoid all carbs, this book focuses on all of the essentials of good health, breaking down the myths to help you truly understand how to lose weight. It's pretty amazing once you read the book how many myths there are about weight loss and I'm sure you would be surprised at how many that you truly believed to be the truth.

The Myths
This books main focus is covering the different myths about weight loss, to help you avoid the trap falls that they create.

One of the biggest myths that this book talks about and I use all of the time in my weight management programs is that eating less, will help you to lose weight. The reality of weight loss is that your body is super adaptive to changes. So the bigger the change, the more drastically your body reacts. So, if you are used to eating a good amount of food and you suddenly cut off your food supply, then your body is going to freak out. Rather than achieving a weight loss result, your body is going to slow down as much as possible, it's going to tank your internal metabolism, and it's going to start storing all food as fat, to ensure that you don't starve to death. Your body is beginning to go into protection mode. You may think that you know what you're doing as far as weight loss goes, but your body was built over thousands of years of evolution and our ancestors would go through periods where food wasn't readily available, so the body compensated. Our bodies still do this to this day, even with many other ways in which we evolved, our bodies still react the same way, storing fat in order to save the individual. Not only does this store fat, but the body begins to burn anything that isn't seen as necessary, such as muscle mass. If you ever noticed, those that are anorexic, aren't just missing fat, they are missing muscle mass as well. That's because the body, converted the muscle mass into energy. The problem with doing this is somewhat complex, but essentially your muscles are what burn your calories. For every pound of muscle that you have, you burn 110 calories a day. So if you were to lose 5 pounds of muscle because of your crash diet... you may think that you lost weight, but in reality, you are going to put on substantially more in the long run. This is because your body from losing just five pounds of muscle, would burn 550 less calories a day... which equates to about a meal a day that won't be burned off. I think you see the results of
