What is an associate's degree?

I was in my forties when I got my Associate of Arts degree. I was very proud. What does this mean? It means that age does not matter when getting a degree. In fact more people in there forties and up are getting there degrees.

An associate degree is an academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, business colleges and some bachelor's degree-granting colleges and universities upon completion of a course usually lasting two years.

When you enter into to the two year college, you have to complete what is called the core subjects. These are English, history, government, algebra, and sciences. You also have electives, which depending on what the college offers, you choose what you like from the list.

You are not refused entrance into college if you fail their entrance exam, what they look at is what you need help in most and you take those courses. An associate degree is the stepping stone to getting your bachelor's, masters, and doctorate.
Your grades from the two year college is transfered to the university and put toward your bachelor degree.

You can also get a certification instead of your associate degree if offered in the courses you want to take. Also some two year colleges offer to help you get your GED, or high school diploma.

Your guidance counselor is your best resource. They will help you plot out your degree plan.

Now most colleges if not all, have night classes as well as day classes and this is most helpful for those who work during the day.

There are different types of grants you can look into, again, your counselor is a great resource for help.

If you ever wanted to go to college or go back to college, now is the time to do it. When graduation arrives the feeling of accomplishment is exhilarating.
