How to identify reliable resources for parenting your baby

by Jo.H

Every person that you speak to will have a different idea about how to be a parent. Some people might offer great advice but if what they are saying doesn't fit in with how you want to raise your child then ignore it.

It's a fact that no one can prepare you for parenthood. It doesn't matter how many books you read, the reality is always different. No one is a born parent, we all learn as we go along.

My advice is talk to your partner and decide how you want to raise your children. Discuss how you will reprimand them when they misbehave.
Talk about how you will broach sex education.
I know these subjects might be a long way off, but so long as you and your partner are together on the major issues you can work out the minor stuff as you go.

Parents can never resist getting involved and telling you 'how it was done in their day.' While their advice can be useful, it can also be outdated.

In the early days the best person to talk to is a midwife. She deals with babies every day and can offer advice on most subjects.
Another good place to go for back up advice is a mothers group. They are all experienced mother and will probably already dealt with whatever situation you are facing.

Although all of these people can offer advice, in the end it comes down to what you feel is right for your child. I have three children and what has worked with one will not necessarily work with another.

To sum up, all parents are different and all children are different. Only you and your partner know your child so follow your heart. Love them, guide them, teach them honesty, and support them. Everything else will sort it self out.
