How to meet people when traveling alone

If you're good looking and young, you'll have no trouble at all meeting people while traveling alone. You'll probably be overwhelmed by eager characters wanting to meet and do more serious things with you. Your problem will be to determine how to sort the good ones from the bad ones.

First of all, unless it is for a day trip or an evening out for dinner, try not to travel alone. However, when you're on those kinds of short trips, a couple of guys or a couple of gals together are usually more successful. They have much better chances of hooking up with the same at bowling alleys, theaters, cafes, singles bars or other places where singles gather to ogle and mix.

For serious business or pleasure trips of more than two days, the lone traveler has many options. If it is for business, you'll rub shoulders with many people who have similar interests. If any appeal to you (or make positive gestures) for getting together socially, you can be assured of safe ... and hopefully pleasant ... times together.

If you're traveling for pleasure, and are willing to sign up for structured trips such as cruises and excursions, you may want to select those that cater to single (or pretending to be single) people of your age, orientation, education and other common interests. If you want to do your traveling with more independence, you'll find many opportunities to meet new people on flights, at museums, at theaters and at scads of other gathering places.

Of course, the matter of personal safety should always be uppermost in your plans. With many parts of the world in social, political and war upheaval, most agencies and experts recommend you avoid traveling to foreign countries alone. Whatever your choices, best wishes for a most enjoyable time meeting and enjoying new people.
