After the honeymoon, couples often find that settling back into real life can be a little uncomfortable and awkward. If this is a first marriage for both individuals, chances are, there will be plenty of confusion and doubt, but the important thing is to turn toward each other, rather than away from each other when things get difficult. Keep in mind the following tips and you should be able to increase your chances of first-year marriage survival.
1. Talk! Always keep lines of communication open between you and your partner. Be open about your needs and emotions. Letting things build up in an attempt to "let things go" and continue the honeymoon blindness will only lead to resentment and disillusion.
2. Be accepting. When times get rough, remember who your spouse is and embrace the reasons why you fell in love with him or her in the first place. Support what is important to them.
3. Stay involved. Remember that just because the excitement is supposed to die down after the wedding and honeymoon, does not mean that you have to let your marriage slide down your list of priorities. Try to contribute something, in someway, to your partner's life each day.
4. Remain equals. You are both partners in this marriage. So if you want to be respected, give him/her the respect that they deserve as well. Don't ask them to change when you are unwilling to do so.
Although each couple is different, the first year of marriage is a commonly trying period for newlyweds. After the excitement of the wedding dies down, couples have to sink back into the routine of their pre-wedding lives, with the added change of having to now consider and incorporate their spouse. If couples remember to work together, they can certainly avoid the post-honeymoon slump.
