Identifying reliable resources for helping you to parent your baby is an issue that faces all new parents. Everyone who knows you had a baby will offer you advise about one subject or another regarding babies. But, how do you know which advice you should use and which advice is something that you want to avoid?
First of all you'll definitely want to listen to what your Pediatrician and the nurses in the hospital tell you. Take any classes you can while you're in the hospital and read all the baby instruction manuals that they give you. (yeah, wouldn't that be just great if there really was such a thing!)
What I've always told young mothers is to listen to everything that people tell you, and thank them for their advice. Then, take that advice and the ideas that you think you'd like to use or that you find interesting. Consider the source; has this person done a good job in raising their own children? Do you respect this person? Do you trust this person? Chances are if you answer "yes" to those questions, you can probably trust the advice that they give you. There's nothing wrong with trying ideas out, as long as it's not harmful to your baby. If it works for you, then use it. If it doesn't work, then go on to something else.
Watch different women who are in your life and how they've raised their own children. If you like what you see in the way their children behave and listen, then, you'll probably want to keep in mind as a resource for asking questions about parenting.
Two of the key people in your life who you will want to rely on for helping you with your parenting skills is your own mother and your mother-in-law. They have your best interests at heart and that new baby is their precious little grandchild. Use your family as a support group as often as you can. If they're visiting from out-of-town, take advantage of their services and get all the rest you can while they are there.
The most important thing to remember is that women have inborn instincts on how to be a mother; tune in to them, become aware of them, believe in them, listen to them, and use your instincts.
