Mistakes new magazine writers make and how to avoid them

are things that staff writers have to write about because by the time you get your article reviewed, most likely the time has already passed for that type of article. You need to write about things that aren't going to expire within the next 30-45 days. This is generally the amount of time you have to work with. If you don't follow that guideline, you'll find you are purely getting turned down, without reason. But in actuality it's because your writing was timely enough for them, so it would have been old news by the time it would have been placed in the magazine. This of course would do them no good, so it's not worth publishing anymore.

Also, a new writer needs to remember to check what the format for submitting writing is. If it is required that it be printed, make sure it is printed, if they want it on CD, make sure it is on CD. They may also state that they want it to be in a certain format, maybe Office 2007, maybe Works, Maybe Quark, whatever style of delivery they require, you'll have to find a way to get it in that format or they aren't even going to be able to open what you wrote, which will obviously get you rejected before they even have a chance to read your work. Also, remember that some require that you include a SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) if you want to get a return letter that states if you were accepted or rejected. This is a good thing to include, because most magazines receive so many submissions each issue that it wouldn't be cost effective to respond to all of them, unless they include a means of responding that is already paid for.

Essentially it comes down to doing your research, knowing who you are sending to and what they are looking to and make sure that you have a properly edited article. If you do all this, the odds of getting published will be drastically increased.
