When the lifetime network first came out, it was as if woman had a channel to call their own. Movies and television shows that dealt with the assorted issues that we as women have to deal with on a daily basis. Lifetime, however, lost their claim to fame as other networks took their idea and ran with it. With so many channels to chose from the lifetime network has to evolve with the here and now in order to get a piece of women's television market.
Every once in awhile I find myself turning to the lifetime network. After all, I have to give them two thumbs up for their re-enactments of true stories. Everyone has a story and lifetime seems to not only recapture the actual events but to pay tribute to those who actually have gone through whatever it was that made them part of history. Whether the story be about someone who was trapped in his automobile after an accident for seven days, how we came to get the Amber alerts, how certain child predators were brought to justice or even how someone survived the fight of their life while battling breast cancer. These and other stories of courage should and do have a place on television thanks to the Lifetime network.
There is always pros and cons to any network and the Lifetime Network's could be considered the fact that it is kind of old fashioned. Even though the stories that they tell are in the here and they are more than likely a little light on the special effects. They are also a little more conservative than other networks. This, however, is both a good and bad thing. The upside of this is a story worth spotlighting doesn't necessarily need that many special effects if you are really listening to the message. That way women like me know that they have a place to go to watch good wholesome entertainment without fear of being shocked or disgusted by experiencing a networks attempt to test boundaries when it comes to content.
With a name like Lifetime network, however, one can't help but be stereotyped with a channel that is non-stop chick flicks twenty-four hours, seven days a week. This could be large and part because it has been advertised as "television for women." If you think about it, however, the people reading the television guide should evolve with the times too. These days stereotyping woman shows cannot really be done anymore. With woman in the house, in congress, woman doctors and lawyers, our lives have become more interesting. The days of black and white shows about the non-existent life of housewives are over. So the label "television for women" can mean any variety of things. They can only discover what women really want, however, by tuning in.
