The Detroit Lions. If you look up the term bottom-feeder in the dictionary, there would be a picture of the Detroit Lions logo. Not that there was much to talk about in Detroit as far as football is concerned before Barry Sanders retired, but they haven't even come close since.
If the Lions want to improve then I have the blueprints right here. Step one: fire Matt Millen. The man can talk football and should go back to Fox and beg for his job back and never return to the NFL. The man clearly has no idea what he's doing. He drafted a WR with a top ten pick three years in a row and now only has one of them. He traded away a very good coverage corner in Dre Bly for a speed running back in Tatum Bell. Speed backs need a good push from the offensive line. The Lions O-line doesn't provide that on a consistent basis.
Step two: With the number two pick, the Detroit Lions select...Joe Thomas, OT out of Wisconsin. Every great team has a good offensive line. Games are won and lost in the trenches. Joe Thomas is a young stud who can protect the back side of his QB, which brings me to my next step. There's also potential to bring in solid O-linemen in the second and third rounds.
Step three: Sign David Carr. Jon Kitna is nice but he's not going to be bringing home the Lombardi trophy. David Carr is quick and has good pocket presence. The only thing holding him back in Houston was a lack of offensive line protecting him.
Step four: The Detroit Lions have an early second round pick and I think they should go after Daymeion Hughes, CB out of Cal. Hughes is a solid corner and the Lions need defensive help. This would be a good pick for a team with many defensive woes.
Now a team isn't going to from worst to first in one season. I understand that the Saints did it last year but there were alot of impact free agents last season. If the Lions make the moves that I listed then they will definitely be an improved team and on the rise. Defense wins championships and if the Lions hope to get back to the promised land then they will need to make some moves for some impact defensive players.
