My beloved Dad passed away some years ago just six days before my birthday.
His death wasn't expected and came to us as a terrible shock, such a shock that I couldn't even cry, couldn't feel anything at all.
My Mum was already in a nursing home very ill with a dementia related disorder so it was left to my sister and me to pack the house hold treasures away and to dispose of clothes and personal items.
Amongst my fathers things was a card wishing me a happy birthday with his and my Mum's love and a fifty dollar note. At first I couldn't hardly look at it and then the healing sobs caught at my throat and the tears began to flow until they became a torrent.
Yes I still have the card, yes I spent the money on a special remembrance treasure that reminds me of them both every day, but the best gift was his love reaching out to me from across the divide and enveloping me so that I could cry.
