How to pack a backpack

There is an old rule when packing a backpack, first lay out everything that you need for a trip then halve it.  Many people have a tendency to try and cram too much gear into the backpack and often find that they do not actually use every item that was included anyway.  Here are a few other good packing tips:

~  Make sure that all items are compactly wrapped and kept separate from others where there is a risk of incompatibility, such as when packing foodstuffs and water with items of clothing; avoid packing alcoholic products with anything flammable.  Take a good quality mini first-aid kit with you and be sure to pack this in a place that is easily accessible and convenient.

~  Ensure that any tools, pocket knives, compasses, money and credit cards or other necessary items are packed in a place where they are easy to locate if needed.  Keep in mind what order you will be needing the items in the course of your trip and be sure to pack the less needed and less important belongings towards the bottom of the back.  A change of underwear and socks are best kept at the top of the backpack for the sake of convenience.

~  Keep the weight distribution even in the backpack and make sure that no sharp objects or awkwardly shaped items impede the comfort of the carrier.  Be especially careful when packing belongings of a mechanical nature or those that contain sensitive parts such as P.C.s and cameras. Items like this are best kept in their own separate protective cases and not packed close to sharp objects.

~  Absorbent items such as tissues and paper towels are often indispensable to pack and make sure to take care that they are kept away from liquids and drink containers.  The inclusion of small, disposable garbage bags are often handy when storing litter and other waste materials. They can be used to keep your backpack tidy and uncontaminated.

When the packing is complete be sure to test the backpack before taking it on your trip. You want to ensure that it is comfortable to carry and that it is not too heavy when walking with it strapped to your back. To make sure that the overall weight of the backpack is not excessive it can be a good idea to avoid packing any extra clothing or bedding and if needed to buy these items at a later stage.  Think light as possible from the outset and you shouldn't go far wrong in your packing.
