The way individuals live their lives and use resources and appliances within their homes and gardens can make all the difference in improving the environment. Here are some environment-saving tips for keeping your home green:
To lower greenhouse gas emissions:
instead of driving, consider walking, cycling, car pooling or public transport
try to purchase locally produced foods and merchandise
To lower amounts of landfill:
only purchase items with minimal or no packaging
reuse
recycle
compost
do not purchase or use Styrofoam or other un-biodegradable products
do not use plastic bags - instead invest in some fabric bags
To conserve Earth's resources:
replace leaking pipes and the washers in dripping taps
only purchase water and energy efficient washing machines and dishwashers
have shorter showers
only use grey water to water gardens
do not leave lights, televisions or other appliances on when not in use
rather than turn on heating, put on more clothing or use a throw rug
to shut out heat, lower the blinds (then the air-conditioner can be turned down)
only purchase furniture and wood-chip made from plantation timbers
