ABBA, the Swedish pop group sensation, that emerged on the music scene in the early 1970s and recorded several hits through the entire decade and into the 1980s, is going to release a new song.
The group broke up in 1982 and have refused to reunite despite their ongoing popularity.
However, this has changed. According to a Reuters report, the group is releasing a new version of their last album and will feature a previously unreleased song.
The ABBA official website says the release will be on Apr. 23. The song is ‘From A Twinkling Star To A Passing Angel’. This will be the first time the group has "opened the doors to the tape vaults to release previously unheard music from the group’s heyday." The song is described as a "demo medly"
Abba says this will be a "Deluxe Edition" of The Visitors, the band's last and final studio album, which was released originally in 1981. The band says, as a part of the package, there will be several bonus selections and a DVD that shares both previously unreleased and rare footage from Abba archives.
ABBA had four members in the band, Agnetha Faltskog, Anna-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Despite their long-time disbanding, many fans still actively listen to their music and the release of the musical and film version of "Mamma Mia" has contributed to their ongoing popularity with new generations.
The foursome have refused to perform together since 1982 after the band's breakup. According to Rolling Stone the band even rejected to get back together after the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame almost two years ago.
When the announcement was made, Benny Andersson said he would perform if asked, however predicted the band would not reunite saying, "The people who are really fond of Abba for what we did, I think we are doing them a favor by not going out. We all feel the same. It's been too long of a time."
"I didn't think this would happen, because we were a pop band, not a rock band," he had also said. "Being a foreigner from the North Pole, this feels really good."
The Guardian reported the release of the new song and mentioned that the band's male members, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, said in 2008 they were "staunchly opposed" to a reunion. "We would like people to remember us as we were," Ulvaeus had said. "Young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition."
While fans may never get an opportunity to see the foursome perform, they will get a chance to hear new material in the form of a song.
