There is a big reason why 'scheme' is part of get rich scheme. The reality of someone being able to make money off of a 'proven' method of obtaining wealth is extremely doubtful. While someone might have been able to work the system and make money off of the original plan, for it to be duplicated by the many thousands of people that have started the program, would be nearly impossible.
A good example of this is if I was the first person to start the scheme where you add your name to a list and everyone sends you a dollar, then I would probably be a millionaire because it had never been done before so I would have little resistance. But now that it's been seen and done so many times it would be extremely difficult to make any money as it would be hard to convince people to participate in it. The same is true with Avon, Tupperware, and a variety of other different programs that have been established to assumably make people wealthy. Unfortunately, they are so overused that now they aren't effective anymore.
In answer to the question of whether a get rich scheme works, I guess you could say that some do. But the reality is that they will only work for a short period of time before there are too many people involved in the scheme. But now that everyone has already seen so many different schemes, many people just filter these out and ignore them anyway, so realistically they just aren't going to be effective in drawing the attention that they need in order to build your pyramid, in order to get enough people to sign up, in order to get enough people to buy this or that, in order to get enough people to send you that $1, in order to do anything. The reality is that people are past the standard get rich schemes and are ready for the next major get rich quick plan before they are going to start truly reacting to it.
However, I would imagine that if you were to target the poor and uneducated, many of these schemes could still work. If someone doesn't have the education they aren't as likely to know enough about these programs to turn them down. The hard part would be developing a list that includes nothing but the lower class that lack education. But if you did have this list, you could effectively market to the people that would be most likely to fall for such a scheme and thus support your pyramid or sign up for whatever you are selling.
