How children learn

by Brenda

Noam Chomsky believed that all children have a language acquisition device ( LAD ), an innate ability to process language .( Fenney , Christensen & Movarcik 2006 pg 112)
Children acquire language and literacy growth through the four main components of language arts . Through reading , listening , writing and speaking , children aged 6 will able to express themselves better and can be understood by all with the sufficient vocabulary that they have acquired .

In the classroom , different learning corners will help assist a child in the growth of language and literacy. Corners such as the reading corner , writing corner and dramatic play corner help enhance the growth of language and literacy among the children . The environment should be print rich which will help children with information like the weather , birthdays , the days of the week and more as they read the charts when they move around the class. Literacy activities also play important roles. ( Berk 2006 pg 263)
The reading corner should be placed in a quiet area of the class with soft furnishing like cushions ,a carpet as well as child-sized furniture for children to relax on while they read . There should be a wide range of age appropriate, interesting and well cared for books on an uncrowded child accessible shelf . The books should be displayed attractively to draw children to the books that interest them. The walls of the reading corner should be decorated with charts which have pictures of the stories or alphabets. There should also be simple rules set for the reading corner like keep quiet when in corner or three children only .

Books should be maintained with all pages intact so that children will be able to read the whole story and enjoy it thoroughly . The books should be changed on a regular basis so that it will remain interesting for all children . ( Feeney et al 2006 pg 244 )

Various methods can be employed to inculcate the love for reading in children. Reading to a child on a one -on-one basis can help the individual appreciate and understand the story better. The teacher can also read to the whole class or to a group of children with pauses in between so as to allow interaction with the use of open ended questions. There can also be peer reading among children who need assistance paired with children who can read a little better.( Morrow , Gambrell & Pressley 2003 pg 52 ) In Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding the child can achieve his zone of proximal development with
