Just as Coleridge was distracted when writing “Kubla Khan,”
A “person from Porlock” took me away from writing today.
Truly, it wasn’t writer's block, but constant interruption
That kept me from documenting all I had to say.
My “person” was an urgent phone call,
Then a man at the door, selling ferns,
Then my children bouncing off wall after wall…
So, miffed, my muse left and refused to return.
The truth is that I didn’t feel the muse today
And Porlock is just an excuse.
My inspiration was dancing far away
And my ideas were utter refuse.
But I have to explain those blank pages away.
Thus the presence of Porlock my fault reduces.
It worked for Sam Coleridge back in the day.
The greatest writers always have the best excuses!

Poetry: Excuses
I know I do it, I blame you for everything
I always have
I probably always will
But I don't know why
I know it's not your
you tell me what I want to hear
Whenever you're not near
But excuses are all I see
There's nothing more but to set you free
Just as Coleridge was distracted when writing “Kubla Khan,”
A “person from Porlock” took me away
