Being taken for granted at work can leave you feeling unappreciated and even resentful at times. While some people are unaware of the fact that they are being taken advantage of others are aware of the situation. These people need to know exactly what to do if they are being taken for granted at work.
Being taken for granted at work usually means that even when you deserve credit or acknowledgement you do not get it. While you are ready to help your colleagues or boss with extra work they are never there for you.
Here is what to do if you are being taken for granted at work:
Assessment:
Before you say or do anything you need some time to clear your thoughts. Think about particular times that you feel someone has taken advantage of you and how you felt. It's important that you are in the right state of mind before you decide to take any action.
Say 'no':
The reason that some people are taken advantage of is simply because they cannot say no to anyone. Their boss or colleagues may not even realise that they are taking this person for granted as they tend to say yes to any request.
Being too nice:
There is nothing wrong with being polite or nice to the people you work with but there is a limit to niceness. In the quest to be nice people sometimes forsake their own needs and desires to fulfil someone else's. Be nice but you don't need to go overboard with it.
Develop yourself:
There are certain traits in people that could lead to others taking them for granted. Some people are too shy too speak up for the fear of sounding rude and so they refuse to do anything about the problem. Look at what traits could be reasons that you are being taken for granted at work.
Talk to the person/people:
In some situations it can be helpful for you to tell the other person of your feelings. There are many bosses who like to load a large quantity of work on certain employees and if you refuse to take it they may seek an explanation.
Distinguishing right from wrong:
Don't fall into the trap of victimizing yourself and thinking that everything is against you. You need to separate reality from paranoia. Look for the signs of someone taking another person for advantage and how they genuinely compare to your situation.
Different strategies will work for different people so choose the right solution to your problem and situation. The steps above can stop you from being taken for granted at work.
