Having your home painted can be expensive and during hard economic times it is important that you get the most value for your money. Below are some tips to help you get the best painter for your money. Although it is true that you get what you pay for, it is also not necessary to hire the most expensive painter to get the best work done.
Your first step should be to invite several contractors to give you estimates. You need to compare prices to ensure you are getting the best deal. When the contractor is on site make sure that he knows you are getting several estimates so that the prices will be more competitive. All estimates should be free and appointments should be made at your convenience.
Before the contractors arrive have a plan for what you would like done. Think about all of the things you will need painted. In addition, be clear about how much prep work you want done, how many coats of paint you want and the quality of paint you would like used. This ensures you are comparing prices for the same quality of work and materials. Also, feel free to ask for references or photos of previous jobs to help in decision making.
Before your contractor starts the job there are several things you should ask for. First, you need to be shown color swatches and chose your own color. Next, you should have a signed contract that includes all of the above specifics. Also, make sure the contract outlines any warranty for guaranteed longevity of work done. The contract should be signed by the costumer and contractor. Also, make sure that your contractor has both liability and workman's compensation insurance. You should have a certificate of insurance, from the insurance company with your name on it, before the job begins.
Most importantly do not pay for the job ahead of time. If your contractor asks for the full amount in advance there is a good chance they will not complete the job and contractor fraud is difficult to prove and prosecute. A contractor may ask for up to 1/3 of the contracted price in advance to cover materials and payroll for employees. However, you should not give them this deposit until the contractor's first day working on site.
If you see mistakes during work or do not like the look of something speak up right away. It is easier and less expensive to fix before the job has been completed. When the painter completes your job make sure you personally inspect everything closely. Do not pay in full until you are happy with all the work that has been done.
