Group learning is important as this setting gives students an opportunity to discuss different subjects of interest, into a target language. Studying individual words or phrases can be tediously boring, so motivating people to continue speaking is essential and this is much easier to do in a vibrant class environment, discussing interesting issues. Good language institutes are aware of this and use materials that include current affairs, sports, films, fashion and famous people. These topics interest most people, and this quickly stimulates conversation. The question is therefore, what are the advantages and disadvantages of learning a language in a group setting or classroom environment.
When a decision has been taken to learn a language, the student will have to invest a huge amount of time and commitment to attain a reasonable level of fluency. There are various methods of acquiring language skills, and without a doubt the best choice is to go and learn with a group of natives, in their own country. If there are personal commitments to think about, then this is probably not the practical route for language discovery; therefore an alternative learning method must be investigated.
There are many colleges offering different language courses in a classroom setting, so it is important to select one which fits in with the weekly routine. Researching different colleges may pay dividends; and finding an institute that specialises in languages, can only help the success rate. Talking to existing students, may also provide a valuable insight to a college and its culture. This initial investigation is important, because when a course begins, it is from that moment on, the advantages and disadvantages of studying in a group environment will be confronted.
A classroom experience can be less stressful, as participants are generally able to accept constructive criticism with more ease, as they are also allowed to criticise. Students can share their difficulties and solve language exercises together with less anxiety. Teachers can balance group exercises, with stronger students working with slightly weaker ones to raise confidence levels. An article written by Sonia Casal, commented on the “Johnson and Johnson” theory of learning. This hypothesis argued of a definite conformity with the claim; co-operative learning experiences, promote higher achievement, than competitive or individualistic
