Today’s top tight ends are much more than glorified blockers - they are game-changers. Tall, strong and speedy tight ends like Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski can block at the point of attack, get up field quickly and catch the ball with ease. Of course, players like Graham and Gronkowski don’t grow on trees, so there’s going to be some off-season competition for the best free agent tight ends.
1. Jermichael Finley
There’s no doubt that Jermichael Finley is going to get a large contract this off-season. He’s 6-foot-5, weighs 247 pounds, has soft hands, and possesses 4.66 speed. He’s been highly productive during his Green Bay career, which includes two 55-catch seasons and a Super Bowl victory. His history of injuries and dropped passes should be a concern, but he’s just 24 years old with tons of upside and potential.
2. Fred Davis
Fred Davis is the type of tight end that makes quarterbacks, coaches and general managers salivate. At 6-foot-4, 258 pounds, he’s got enough size to be an effective blocker, but it’s his height and agility that allow him to routinely beat coverage and win jump ball battles. Coming off a career season, Davis is expected to get a big contract. However, he may scare off some suitors with his past history of marijuana use.

Scott Chandler flashed some playmaking ability last year as he grabbed 15 catches and scored six touchdowns during Buffalo’s 5-2 start. A former college wide receiver, Chandler has solid speed, good hands and knows how to work the middle of the field. He’s large, but lanky and lacks consistency in his blocking. If he bulks up and commits to his craft, he could very well become the next big name tight end.
4. Visanthe Shiancoe
Visanthe Shiancoe’s production has dropped off since his 56-catch, 11-touchdown season back in 2009-2010. However, it’s fair to note that he’s had the likes of Donovan McNabb, Christian Ponder and Joe Webb throwing him the ball since then. A bit on the lean side, Shiancoe’s agility, quickness and sure hands make him an excellent fit for those teams that run double-tight end sets.
5. John Carlson
Once upon a time, John Carlson was a promising young player. He played in 32 games over his first two years, averaging 53 catches and six TDs. A down year followed in 2010 and he missed all of 2011 after he suffered a torn labrum. Still in rehab, Carlson’s tall frame, long arms and good
