When we talk about Iraq closing its borders with its neighbors, Syria and Iran, we need to consider a number of facts

For Arabs, Iraq is part of the Arab World which did not use to have borders between its states. They all speak the same language, share the same culture and religious make up. Regarding closing the borders with Iran, although Iran is not an Arab country, but same as Iraq, it is a predominantly Shiite country with holy places in Iraq that they need to visit.

Another important point is that for many Iraqis fleeing the bitter fighting and the mayhem caused after the occupation of Iraq, Syria is the first country they tend to flee to with hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees already there. Closing the borders with Syria means that Iraqis whose lives are at risk in their own country will not have a place to escape to.

Furthermore, as Iraq is a country struck with poverty as a result of the war and as the Iraqis are desperate to get their country back on its feet, keeping the borders opened is important for the transportation of goods in and out of Iraq. It is also more reassuring to businesses who think or who are already working in Iraq.

Closing the borders will only isolate Iraq further and is less likely to have much impact on the violence in Iraq as there is no evidence to support the claim that most of the terrorists come from neighboring countries. Working toward bringing the Iraqi divided communities together and ridding the country of the sectarian gangs may help to stabilize Iraq more than closing its borders
