There are a lot of different things that you have to consider when you are thinking about what a best friend really is. Being that I grew up all over the place, I never really got to stay in a single spot, my definition of a best friend I'm sure is quite different than that of many others. However, ultimately, I think everyone has the same basic concept of what a best friend is.
For me personally, the thing that really makes a best friend is someone that is there, regardless of where you are in life, regardless of your location, and regardless of your hair color, religion, political affiliation, job, whatever. Your best friend might not agree with a single thing you believe in, but because they are your best friend, they don't care and are still there for you and will support you through everything, regardless of how much they hate that cause. To me this makes an incredible best friend.
Also, I think a best friend is someone that is willing to take a week off of work because you have some crazy idea to drive across the country just to see what the oranges taste like in Florida. If they were a real best friend, they would say that the idea is crazy, and probably stupid, but what the hell, they are going with you anyway, because they know that they are going to have one hell of a good time driving across the country, regardless of the purpose. The best friend shouldn't look at the cause, but the journey, and that's what really makes a best friend. They are able to look past your flaws, your stupid ideas, and just focus on what really matters... the time that you spend together and the fun that you share.
Another trait that really proves that you have a best friend is someone that is willing to stand up for you, fight for you, and take a punch for you, regardless of how bad they know it will hurt. If they aren't willing to stick up to a gang to protect you, then they obviously aren't as good of a friend as you thought. If they aren't willing to throw that rock as you're being gang attacked, they obviously aren't that great of a friend. They need to be willing to be beat up just as much as you are, suffer the pain just like you did, and then crawl over after it is all said and done to ask you if you are alright.
To me... those are examples of what it takes to be a best friend. Sure they are a little rough, but best friends are supposed to be a little rough. They are supposed to know your inner workings and create a plan of action to match you on anything, make sure that you don't do anything stupid, and enjoy every moment of the times that you are together, regardless of how bad it may be. Best friends find a way to make the best out of every situation, and if they don't, and find ways to be miserable while with you, then maybe you need to reconsider who you think your best friend is.
