Disney has been winning the hearts of young and old alike since 1923. Because of Disney's huge popularity, many people have begun to collect Disney memorabilia, sometimes affectionately called "Disneyana." Some of the more popular items of Disney memorabilia that is collected are Mickey Mouse watches, Disney pins, and character figurines.
Mickey Mouse watches are the most collected piece of Disneyana today. They were first introduced in 1933 by the company Ingersoll. It was sold for $3.25, and later $2.95. There was also a Mickey Mouse pocket watch made around the same time. The Micky Mouse watch has a round dial with three little Mickeys on a disc to show the seconds. They have continued to be produced since 1933 just as slightly different models and are produced by several different companies.
Another very popular set of collectibles are the Disney pins. Thousands of unique pins featuring Disney characters, attractions, icons, and other elements have been created over the years. The special thing about these pins are that they were only released for a limited time or only for special events such as movie premiers. Most Disney pins are enamel or enamel cloisonn with a metal base and a number of them can be found on none other than eBay.
Disney character figurines are another popular set of collectibles. The Walt Disney Classics Collection began releasing figurines in 1992. It was the first time that the Disney Company has produced on their own figurines. The quality and increasing values of the limited edition and retired figures has attracted a large number collectors all over the world. They became so popular that in 1933,Disney introduced the Walt Disney Collectors Society which now has over 60,000 members.
Disney collectibles seem to be so popular because of the feelings people have associated with Disney. Just the word Disney provokes in many people, feelings of joy, youth, and happiness. It's no wonder that there are many Disney collectors today.
