Any hacking that has any reason is a two-step process: the "crack" (in which the hacker learns that a} there is a place he can enter the system and b} there is a way to manipulate the operation within once he gets there) and the "hack" (the operation-coding done within).
True hackers are like the inventors of weaponry-they do their thing because it's the thing they do. In most cases, the hackers have every intention keeping the hacked systems highly efficient; but their works (known as "hacks") are also subject to the uses of those who have more-selfish intentions.
That's where you find the criminal kind of hacker ... also known as a "kiddie-cracker," they're the ones who 'find' the works of the true hackers and then apply those works selfishly. Most of the 'hacks' these kiddies use are simply access-codage one might use to replace the code already in any site that allows for user-input.
The example that I'm sure comes to mind is MySpace, where many 'kiddie-crackers' use 'hacks' found on the `Net in order to attach "bling" to their profiles and/or -blogs. Bling-adding hacks do not actually enhance the profiles in any practical way, and so might be better-off called 'jacks' (in order to restore some respectability to the noble title of "Hacker"-first held by William Shakespeare.)
