Classifying the exact needs that someone must have for business success is pretty hard, because there are so many different types of degrees available, so many jobs within the business environment, and so many different requirements that each employer has. However, there are some academic qualifications that will aid you greatly in the process making your transition into a new business career and eventually success substantially easier.
When you are considering how much education you need to get into the business world, you need to first understand what type of job you are looking to obtain. If you just want an entry level position, you realistically need nothing more than a diploma. If you have that then you can get virtually any entry level business position. However, if you are looking to become an entry level manager, you'll find that the experience requirements increase. For most entry level managers minimal education is required, just experience and hard work. However, those that do have a degree of some sort are automatically going to garner more positive attention by those doing the hiring. For a starting manager, I would suggest having at least an Associates degree in general business. With that you can get yourself in the door relatively easily. You might have to try a few times but eventually you'll get the job as long as you show yourself to be intelligent and hard working.
To get a somewhat higher manager position such as a department manager, area manager, and sometimes store manager of a smaller store, you are going to need a Bachelors degree in general business at a minimum, however, depending upon what area of business you go into you are going to need to be more specialized. If you want to be an accountant you'll need a Bachelors in Accounting. If you want to work at a hotel, you are going to need a Bachelors in Hospitality Management, if you want to work in Computer Information System you are going to need a corresponding specialty. These specialties will give you the added skills that you need to go above and beyond and be successful in that particular part of the industry.
If you are looking for a store manager job for a major retailer a regional manager position or some sort of operations manager, you are going to want a Masters degree in Management or Leadership. Having this will not only expedite your process to the top, it will also give you the bonus of being able to negotiate somewhat on salary. This is because most store directors don't have a Masters but do have a Bachelors. This extra level of schooling gives you a huge advantage over the other managers applying for the same position, regardless of your previous experience.
But ultimately, regardless of your experience, and career field you want to get into, it is wise to look into obtaining a degree specialized for that field to give yourself the best possible chance at obtaining the job.
