Upon graduation from cosmetology school you will need to successfully complete a license exam. You will then be a licensed cosmetologist and can begin work at a salon. When you have gained experience at the job you can begin planning to open your own hairdressing salon. However, obtaining a license in cosmetology is not required to own a business.
Business License
Obtain a business license from your state. Perform a search to see if the business name that you want to use is available. File for the license and pay the applicable license fee. You can use your first name or a name that is related to hairdressing for the business name. Make sure to apply for any occupational and safety licenses, if they are required by your state to operate a hairdressing salon.
Start Up Costs
Determine how you will fund your hairdressing salon business. You can obtain a business loan through a bank, credit union or the Small Business Administration. Funds can also be provided by a member of the family or from personal savings. If you plan to take out a business loan, a business plan will need to be developed and put on paper as part of the application process.
Location
Find a suitable location in an area that you want to provide hairdressing services. Look for a building to rent or one that you can eventually purchase. Determine if this location will meet the needs of potential clientele. Your business can be located in a mid to large city or in your hometown.
Checking Account and Insurance
Go to a local bank or credit union and open a business checking account. This account is to be used for paying bills and making deposits. Contact a local insurance agent and obtain business insurance, as this is needed for against loss to your building, the contents and from liability.
Equipment and Supplies
Purchase the equipment that you will need for your hairdressing salon. This include hair dryers, bonnet hair dryers, combs, brushes, hair straighteners, dyes and any other equipment that you will use. Towels and access to a laundry will also be required.
Employees
Determine how many employees you will need, if any, when you start out. As your business grows you may need to hire one or more employees to meet demand. As you hire employees you will need to start a payroll and deduct for taxes. Balancing your books may require the help of an accountant.
Grand Opening
Advertise a grand opening for your hairdressing salon. Provide a coupon for a free service that you can provide to get people through the door. Decorate the building and make sure that everything is in order before your formally open the doors for business.
