The average crochet enthusiast hardly needs an excuse to start a new project, and home décor items for the bathroom are just as good of a reason as any other. Tissue box covers, toilet seat covers, bat mats and washcloths abound, so why not a crocheted toilet paper roll cover?
Anyone with experience crocheting in the round will no doubt find making a toilet paper roll cover a breeze. After all, if you can make a circle, all you have to do is stop adding increases for the edges of each additional row to start to taper and form “walls,” and in no time you have a quick topper for that poor, unfortunate, naked toilet paper roll.
Why allow a poor, neglected toilet paper roll to languish in obscurity? Why not give it a starring role as the focal point of your bathroom? (Not to mention the great conversation piece it will make as an objet d’art.)
All jokes aside, a crocheted toilet paper roll cover can be as simple as a cylindrical topper, round lidded box, or something a little more sophisticated such as a tiered doll’s dress. There are a wide variety of patterns available on the web, including some pretty unique options such as the sushi roll cover from craftbits.com.
For those crochet beginners who have mastered the square but have yet to make a hat or a coaster, Crochet Cabana offers a tutorial on working in the round by Sandra Petit that actually references toilet paper roll covers. For those who may still find working in the round to be a bit of a challenge, the hanging toilet paper roll holder from Crochet ‘N’ More offers another option.
Several other patterns for a wide variety of toilet paper roll covers can be found online at Crochet Pattern Central, including the old-fashioned doll covers as well as some with seasonal themes. There are also patterns listed for other bathroom items such as tissue box and toilet seat covers. Likewise, the web site eHow lists a number of toilet paper roll crochet patterns, including a vintage poodle cover. Unfortunately none of them have images of the finished cover.
No matter what your personal style, creating a crocheted toilet paper roll cover for your own bathroom or even one to give to someone else as a gift can be a fun way to delve into your scrap yarn stash as well as a creative way to make a new crochet statement.
