How to make New Year's Eve fun for your kids

New Year’s Eve does not have to be an adults only event where the liquor is flowing freely, even though it is often thought of that way.  In fact, New Year’s Eve is a great time for families to share together celebrating the year that has passed and anticipating ringing in the new one together.  The following are some things that you can do to make sure that New Year’s Eve is fun for your children.

Sparkling Cider-The champagne that is so common to see at adult New Year’s Eve parties will certainly not be suitable for your children, but there is something about it that adds a spirit of celebration to the night.  A replacement of sparkling cider in beautiful champagne flutes will give your kids that feeling sans the alcohol.

Other Kids-Depending on how much responsibility and activity you want on New Year’s Eve, you may want to consider hosting a New Year’s Eve party that other kids are invited to, as well.  This not only gives your children some people to celebrate with, but it will also give the parents of those children the opportunity to celebrate however they like.  You might even be able to trade off years with a few friends, so that you will get that privilege in the next couple of years.

Pinatas-Although piñatas are not traditionally associated with the American version of a New Year’s Eve celebration, they are so much fun for the kids.  They are easy to create at home and can be filled with horns, streamers, packets of confetti, and other items that will be used when the clock strikes midnight.

Game Nights-Games are a fun way to pass the time until midnight.  Get out the board games, card games, supplies for games like charades, or even the electronic games and prepare for some friendly family competitions!

Resolution Party-Resolutions are a common theme to start the New Year with and New Year’s Eve is a great night to spend making them.  Get each person a “resolution journal” that is themed with something that they like or are interested in and have every person write or draw (depending on the age of the individual) what they want to see happen in their lives over the course of the next year.  Throughout the coming year, these journals can be used to keep track of everyone’s progress and can be brought out again next New Year’s Eve to look at everyone’s progress and changes together.
