Tight lines:
The sea greets you with a fine kiss of spray,
That dries on your skin on this warm summer’s day.
You load up the tackle and stow the rods,
And usher up prayers to the good fishing gods.
Your friend starts the engine as you cast off the pier,
And the chug of the engine vibrates through your ears.
You ready the traces and cut up the bait,
And drink in the fresh air whilst attaching the weights.
You think of the monsters congregating below,
Greedily lurking in the current’s strong flow.
Of your line as it tightens and the pull and the jerk,
Of your overworked arms as the reel’s put to work.
You cast out your line and catch nothing but sun,
But it doesn’t matter for the day’s just begun.
You natter and chat and laugh and exclaim,
And keep fishing on through the first of the rain.
And when the bite comes,
It pleases your heart.
As you live for the moment,
The pull and the dart.
The fish slowly rises,
And you peer to the deep.
You spy its scales sparkling,
And all of a sudden it leaps.
From the hook it detaches and dives nose down,
Disappearing forever as you stand and frown.
So you pack up your tackle,
And say “that’ll do”,
Time to go home to the warmth of a brew!
