What is Twitter

by Dawn Hawkins

Created on: December 22, 2011

Twitter is one of the most popular social networking sites on the internet. Twitter allows users to connect with others. Each member has the ability to update their “tweets”. A tweet is a message to all of the member’s “followers”. A “tweet” can be about anything that the member wants it to be. It can include links as well, making it a great place to promote businesses.

When leaving “tweets” it is important to remember that it is restricted to just 140 characters. That is often difficult to accomplish when a link is included. A “tweet” is meant to be short because it is just supposed to be a tidbit of information. Twitter prides itself on the basic format, unlike most of its competitors. There are no bells and whistles, which many people prefer.

Twitter’s main competitor has a lot of involved things account holders can use to “enhance” their experience. For those who wish to keep it simple, Twitter is the outstanding choice. People cannot remark on the posts left by other members. Conversations are a little more difficult on this site than others, but it is not meant to be a conversation site. It is meant as a simple update tool to be used by busy people or businesses to “get the word out” about something.

Joining Twitter will not require the user to learn a lot in order to enjoy the benefits. It is so basic that most people can easily use it as soon as they log on. Twitter stays basically the same although there are times the site changes something, it is generally something so minor that the member does not realize it. That is completely unlike the competitor that seems to wait for members to get used to their interface so they can change it again. Twitter prefers not to confuse its users, thereby, keeping it easily useable for everyone.

Twitter is used by a huge number of people from all walks of life. Celebrities frequent Twitter as well as many other businesses who wish to promote their work in a fast, but effective way. Twitter, in short, is a fun place to catch quick information about the people, places and things that people love. Twitter does not require a lot of knowledge to get a quick start, which is an attractive feature to many people. It is unique from other social networking sites. It can be compared to a puppy that is so ugly it is cute. Twitter works and that is what matters most.
