Rural locations for a quiet New Year in Wales

Wales boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United Kingdom, surrounded by sea (apart from its border with England), it is generally mountainous, remote, with over three-quarters of its land given to agricultural use. Outside the major cities of Cardiff and Swansea many small villages offer peace and quiet all year round.

1. Brecon Beacons national park. If you are near Cardiff in the south of Wales slip away to the Brecon Beacons for some stunning peace and quiet. Located some 50 miles from Cardiff, accessible by road, a long distance walking trail and limited public transport it is possible to enjoy a variety of accommodation from country hotels, to campsites and self-contained cottages and even a converted castle (see

Craig Y Nos). The highest point of the Brecon Beacons is Pen-y-Fan where stunning views and some great hiking can be enjoyed. For some history try the Tretower Castle and Court or walk the Sugar Loaf for great views over Abergavanny and the Bristol Channel. Check out the opening times of the information centres over new year to make sure you are not disappointed. Always check the weather to make sure that you are not snowed in!

2. Snowdonia national park. In the north of Wales, near Bangor and Aberystwyth, and the little town of Wrexham, lies the Snowdonia national park with the highest, biggest and boldest peaks in Wales and some of the wettest weather. The Snowdon Mountain has a small railway, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, running to the top meaning it can become crowded due to easy access, however in the winter the train often only runs halfway and hikers only will continue to the summit. Accommodation varies from bed and breakfast, farm houses and cottages. The park information centres are only open seasonally (See Snowdonia National Park) and will close in November re-opening in April.

3. St. David's. On the Pembrokeshire Coast to the South-West of Wales lies St. David's the smallest city in Wales, the burial place of the nation's saint, and one of the most historic places in Wales. It is also a site of great religious importance and pilgrims often travel to visit the Cathedral. St. David's boasts excellent surfing making it a busy summer destination and a quiet spot for winter travels. Get accommodation in a holiday cottage or hotel, or even the youth hostel, to enjoy a great new year.
