Flash fiction: A Christmas miracle

We’ll be lifting off soon and in a few hours this scorched rock will be nothing but an entry in the computer banks and a speck in the rear viewing scanners. All in all it was a routine survey I guess. We did find some deposits of uranium, gold, magnesium and a few other things, but there really isn’t enough here to justify anyone ever coming back, except for the anthropologists maybe.

Although it’s been thousands of years, this planet had a Hell of a civilization once. Sad story though. Their sun pulled a super nova on them and just like that everyone and everything was cremated in an unimaginable blazing blast of blue white plasma light. Now there’s nothing left but rocks and a few foundations to show for all of it.

We did find some records stored in an underground cavern though. Not a whole lot mind you, but there was enough to give us a pretty good idea of what those folks were like after we were finally able to figure out how to decipher some of it.

It seems that they had a lot in common with us, except when it came to wars and fighting and stuff like that. As near as we could tell these folks never had any wars and they all just seemed to get along together somehow. Millions of people living together in peace and harmony, can you imagine? By my way of thinking that’s what the anthropologists ought to be real interested in learning more about.

But there was one thing that came up that really bothers me. You see, after the computer geeks took in all of the data and did all of their calculations, it turned out that this star would have been visible from earth when it went super nova. Taking their figuring a bit further they were even able to determine when it would have been visible, and that’s what bothers me.

Even from earth it would have been incredibly bright, hanging there in the eastern sky for a few days. And I know for a fact that it did indeed cause quite a stir at the time. Yeah, it was THAT star, twenty one hundred years ago.

I know God works in mysterious ways, but why'd he have to go and do it like that?
